On Saturday March 19th, a cool -12 degree day, the Iḷisaġvik College’s Student Services Department held its first Ice Bowling Event. A 25 x 30 foot area of the parking lot was smooth as glass, with 2×4 beams acting as bumpers for a make-shift bowling alley for students, staff and community members in Barrow, Alaska. This event took days of planning and with the creative efforts of Earl Davis in the Maintenance Department a smooth ice sheet was laid with nearly 400 gallons of water on the Iḷisaġvik Parking Lot. Student Services Staff spent several days creating Ice Pins out of cups, and semi round bowling balls out of balloons.
Over 20 students, staff and community members came out to the event and enjoyed a quick game of Ice Bowling. As shining ice balls rolled down the smooth glassy lane, the pins glistened in the sun. Participants and fans heard the ice crack and shatter as the ice balloon balls met their ice pin targets. Laughing ensued as some bowlers accidentally cracked their bowling balls by tossing the ball a little too hard down the lane; others let out a roar when the pins were missed completely.
Iḷisaġvik College’s Students Services Department would like to thank all of those who assisted in making this event happen and hopes that all who came enjoyed the Ice Bowling event. Student Services will continue to provide events like this for students and community members. If you would like to participate in future events please check with Iḷisaġvik’s Student Services Department for upcoming activities at 852-1809.
