Iḷisaġvik College is pleased to announce the addition of the Board of Trustees Directors to include a designated seat for Iñupiat Community of the Arctic Slope (ICAS).

(March 30, 2022, Utqiaġvik, Alaska) Iḷisaġvik College is pleased to announce the addition of the Board of Trustees Directors to include a designated seat for Iñupiat Community of the Arctic Slope (ICAS). The Board of Trustees, which was previously made up of 11 seats, consists of seats from each North Slope Community: Atqasuk, Anaktuvuk Pass, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Lay, Point Hope, Utqiaġvik, Wainwright, as well as an At-Large seat, North Slope Borough School District seat, and an Arctic Slope Regional Corporation seat.

Iḷisaġvik College has been working with the North Slope Borough to amend the North Slope Borough Code, Title 8 Chapter 2, to designate an additional seat on the Board of Trustees, dedicated to ICAS. The Board of Trustees met during their spring meeting and passed Resolution 2022-02 to amend Iḷisaġvik College’s bylaws to add the seat. The next steps will be to communicate with ICAS to solicit a representative that will be forwarded to the North Slope Borough for consideration and approval.

“Ilisagvik College is a direct outgrowth guided by the Native American self-determination movement, rooted in our Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions. In 2005, ICAS, who is a federally recognized regional tribal government, sanctioned our institution to become a Tribal College. Now we welcome them, to join our board,” said President, Justina Wilhelm. Furthermore, Wilhelm said, “Our College and our Board is delighted to welcome ICAS”.

Iglaurugut suvunmun (we are moving forward).
