Iḷisaġvik College Gains Recognition for Growing Enrollment

In the November 2011 edition of Community College Week, the North Slope’s own Iḷisaġvik College was named one of the “top 50 fastest-growing public two-year colleges with enrollments under 2500” compared to similar colleges nationwide. Ranked by percent change in head-count from Fall 2009 to Fall 2010, Iḷisaġvik came in at number 24 nationwide with a 27% increase.

“We are thrilled to see our numbers increasing,” said Iḷisaġvik’s Interim President Pearl Brower. “To be recognized nationally for our enrollment growth is awesome and a true testament to the students and employees of Iḷisaġvik! We are here so that our residents have the opportunity of education. Our goal is to achieve the dream of our ancestors—to have local, Native control of our region. The more students we are able to reach, the more this dream becomes a reality!”

Enrollment has been steadily rising since 2004, with each Fall semester’s final unduplicated head-count higher than the last. Fall enrollment is up 9.5% since Fall 2009, with a total of 601 students in the Fall of 2011.
From its establishment in 1996 to Spring 2011, Iḷisaġvik College has graduated 118 students with Associate degrees and awarded a total of 249 certificates, 129 endorsements and 347 GEDs. “I’m so proud of what our students have accomplished over the years,” said Iḷisaġvik College Recruiter Janelle Everett. “As the need for education and job training on the North Slope continues, don’t be afraid to study with us. Remember, more education, more options, more out of life.”

At the North Slope Borough (NSB) Budget Hearings this month, NSB Assembly member Forrest “Deano” Olemaun urged more employers to utilize the opportunities provided by Iḷisaġvik for training their employees. “The opportunity for higher education, right here at home on the North Slope, is an opportunity that everyone can take advantage of!” adds Everett.
