This month’s Student Spotlight is Tiffiny San Andres, of Wasilla.
Tiffiny, please tell us a little bit about yourself and what you are studying at Iḷisaġvik?
I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to Wasilla, Alaska when I was 7 years old. I have 5 brothers and 4 sisters; totaled there are 10 kids. Growing up, I never failed to tell my siblings that I was going to make something of myself, with or without them. I forgot what I wanted in life for a long time. Then 3 years ago I spoke to my big brother Michael on the phone and he reminded me of what I used to say to everyone when I was little. “You wait and see cause I’m going to make something out of me.” Michael was my inspiration. One week later I signed up for classes.
I am receiving my AAS degree in Business Management. After Iḷisaġvik I plan to move back to Wasilla and complete my Bachelor’s degree in Marketing so I can open up my own coffee shop on the North Slope.
My hobbies are working out, and volunteering for various activities hosted by Ilisagvik College Student Government.
What advice do you have for people thinking about signing up for classes?
I believe that true inspiration and creativity comes from someone who makes you think about your own life and how you live it. Remember what you wanted to be when you were a kid. Ask yourself this…Am I living up to the standards that I had for myself when I was a child? Or am I lying to myself everyday just to get by? I would tell them (jokingly) “It’s not like you have anything else better to do, so you might as well go to school and make something of yourself!”
We’re proud of you, Tiffiny! Keep up the good work!
